Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a host of challenges for Rice research as well as for every other endeavor.  Thanks to the support of AMPT Center corporate member ConocoPhillips and Rice Engineering Alumni, the AMPT Center has established the AMPT Resiliency Awards recognize Rice graduate students in AMPT-related fields who have demonstrated exceptional resilience in research in the face of challenges posed by COVID-19.

Each award is $1500.  Up to four awards will be given.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must be a graduate student under the direction of a Rice faculty member who is doing work related to the AMPT Center research areas of additive manufacturing, advanced materials, tribology, dynamics, performance modeling and characterization.
  • The nominee should have a current GPA of 3.3 or higher.

Nomination Process

  • Nominations should be submitted by the nominee’s Principal Investigator, as a single PDF document.
  • The document should include a nominating letter (1-2 pages):
    • The nominating letter should describe how the student has demonstrated exceptional resilience in contributing to research productivity in the face of challenges posed by COVID-19 in the year 2020.
    • Examples of resilience might include: expansion of outreach efforts, new ways of engaging undergraduate researchers, initiatives to address inequity and encourage diversity, pivoting research towards addressing pandemic-related issues, or developing novel solutions to further the research group’s efforts during these times.
    • Additional supporting materials/evidence are acceptable, but optional.
  • Submit the nomination via email by Friday, December 4, 2020 to George Webb, AMPT Center Industry Liaison, gwebb@rice.edu
